Best Christmas Tree Farms in Ireland
Irish Christmas trees are a big part of the festive season on the Emerald Isle, and decorating the tree is a Christmas tradition that often involves the whole family. And the choice of Christmas tree is a personal one for each family.
Many families love a real tree, but some families like an artificial tree. Personally, I prefer an artificial pre-lit Christmas tree which saves on the task of unwinding and untangling the Christmas lights. But for other families, nothing says Christmas more than a real Christmas tree.
While some supermarkets and shopping centres may sell Christmas trees, one of the best places to buy a real Christmas tree is at a Christmas tree farm.
And when it comes to artificial Christmas trees, Ireland is awash with plenty of retailers that sell them.
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have a number of farms you can visit to buy your real Christmas tree, and I’ve compiled them all into this handy list.
I have divided the guide into two sections, one for southern Ireland and one for Northern Ireland. Hopefully, you will find one close enough to get yours!

Types of real Christmas trees
You have seen me refer to Nordmann, Douglas, and Fraser Fir, as well as Spruce. In this section, you can discover the difference between the species and what makes them great as Christmas trees.
Nordmann Fir
This tree has a great, symmetrical shape and retains its needles throughout the festive season. They have a wonderful smell and are ideal for families with kids and pets.
The foliage on the Nordmann Fir is soft enough for delicate little fingers that might be helping with the decorations. They also have great longevity for the festive season.
Noble Fir
These trees have a blue/green hue and upturned branches which are well proportioned and spacious, ideal for showing off larger decorations. It retains its needles well despite them being soft and gives off a pleasant fragrance.
It is the preferred species of Christmas tree in Denmark. Because of their strong but flexible branches, Noble Fir boughs are often used to make Christmas wreaths, garlands, and swags.
Lasiocarpa Fir
This type of Christmas tree has lightweight branches and gives off a pleasant aroma. The strong pine scent adds to their appeal.
The tree has a silvery blue colour with dark green and the needles are short.
Korean Fir
These trees have needles with a silver shining and are also soft and blue-green in colour, ideal for families with young children.
They have excellent needle retention and a pyramid shape. They can tolerate heat conditions, although they prefer cool locations.
Fraser Fir
The Fraser Fir has yellow-green branches and is known for its pleasant scent. It has a conical shape with branches that are angled slightly upwards that are also strong, good for displaying heavier decorations.
Its needles are dark green in colour, and it also has good needle retention.
Douglas Fir
If you are looking for one of the best Christmas trees for the aroma, then choose a Douglas Fir.
The needles of the Douglas Fir, which are blue to dark green in colour and soft, give off the best aroma when crushed. It has a full pyramid shape, with strong branches.
This variety of tree makes up nearly half of all Christmas trees grown in the USA.
Grand Fir
The Grand Fir is also known by a few other names including great silver fir, and western white fir, and has shiny, dark green needles, that when crushed give a citrusy scent.
The needles alternate in length on the tree which gives the tree a fuller appearance.
Canaan Fir
Similar to the other firs, Canaan has short, soft needles that are dark green in colour on the upper surface and have a silvery blue on the under surface.
It has good needle retention like the Fraser but with the strong fragrance of the Balsam Fir. It is also a relatively new species of Christmas tree.
Norway Spruce
This is a fast-growing tree that has needle-like leaves which feature a dark green hue with pointed tips. It has a conical shape which makes it ideal as a Christmas tree.
Although common in the States, it is native to Europe and is the most common variety of Christmas trees found in homes in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Needle retention is poor compared to other trees and it needs to be watered correctly.
Serbian Spruce
One of the newer species on the market for Christmas trees is the Serbian Spruce.
It is more slender than other trees which is perfect for corridors or smaller homes. Its needles are similar to the Norway Spruce but are slightly flatter and soft. The branches are well-spaced and slightly droopy, and it has similar needle retention to the Norway Spruce.
It is recommended to buy this species as close to Christmas as possible to reduce needle drop before the big day.
Blue Spruce
The Blue Spruce, also known as the Colorado Spruce, is loved for its waxy grey-blue needles that tend to curve upwards. It has dense foliage and a conical shape.
It is said to have the perfect Christmas tree shape. It will drop needles in a warm room, but it is the best of the spruce for needle retention.
Lodgepole Pine
A tree native to the Rocky Mountains, it is growing in popularity in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Liked by growers thanks to its resistance to pests and its ability to grow in poor, wet soils, this tree has a low needle drop. It forms clean, gradually tapering shafts and was used by Native Americans for making their lodges, hence the name.
Scots Pine
The Scots Pine is the most common Christmas tree in the UK. It is bright green in colour, has stiff branches, dark needles which hold for around 4 weeks, and has a natural open appearance, perfect for Christmas decorations.
